Computed Tomographic Angiography (CTA). A CTA can be performed quickly to diagnose a PE. You will receive a intravenous injection of contrast dye during the examination. Images of your chest and blood vessels will identify an embolism. This test can also detect other abnormalities that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Ventilation/Perfusion Scan (V/Q). A V/Q scan involves an intravnous injection of radioactive tracer as well as the inhalation of a different radioactive tracer. An image will identify whether there is an obstruction in the blood flow to your lungs, likely caused by an embolism.
